Facilitating

AS A PARENT OR CARER, YOU ARE YOUR CHILD’S MOST IMPORTANT SUPPORT AS THEY WORK THROUGH THEIR COMPASS JOURNEY.

The Parent Facilitator

As a Compass Parent Facilitator, your role is to guide and encourage your child through each stage of their Compass Award journey — helping them select suitable activities, set goals, stay motivated, and reflect on what they’ve learned.

You’ll be there to support, supervise and celebrate — but it’s your child who takes ownership of their program.

Everything you need is provided in the Compass for Families Toolkit, including planning templates, activity ideas, reflection prompts, and example goals.

STEP 2 - TRAINING

PRE-READING This guide walks you through the program structure, your role as facilitator, how to support your child to choose activities, find mentors (if needed), and safely complete each section.

COMPLETE THE TRAINING QUIZ After reading the guide, complete a short quiz to confirm your understanding of how the program works. This ensures you feel confident supporting your child.

STEP 3 - RECEIVE RECORD BOOK

Once you’ve completed the quiz, we’ll send your child’s official Compass Record Book via Australia Post and provide access to any additional tools and resources.

Your Responsibilities as a Parent Facilitator

1. Support and Supervision
Help your child choose activities that are safe, meaningful, and suitable for their age and abilities. You’ll oversee each activity, check in on progress, and provide encouragement along the way.

2. Activity Planning and Mentors
If your child does an activity with another adult (e.g. a coach or tutor), that person can act as a Mentor. Mentors should be trustworthy adults with relevant experience in the activity. You’ll help your child identify appropriate mentors and ensure they understand their role.

3. Goal Setting and Reflection
Support your child to set SMART goals at the start of each section and reflect on their growth at the end. Templates are included in the Record Book to guide this process.

4. Celebration and Recognition
Once your child completes all four sections of a level, you’ll review their progress and sign off their Record Book. You can then order their Certificate and Digital Badge to celebrate their achievement!

Child Safety

Your child’s safety and wellbeing are our top priority. As a parent, you are responsible for supervising or arranging appropriate supervision for each activity.

If your child is engaging in an activity outside the home, make sure the adult supervising the activity is safe, skilled, and has appropriate checks in place (e.g. WWCC, VIT) where applicable.

We provide templates and guidance in the toolkit to help you record mentors and ensure safe participation.
